Stay above the city—not just in it A quiet hilltop hideaway to slow down, work, and unwind.
What is 99steps
Perched on a hill overlooking Sasebo, 99steps is a renovated traditional Japanese house
that works as three spaces in one:
a whole-house stay, a daytime café, and a sunset bar.
It’s close enough to walk from downtown,
yet high enough to feel peacefully removed from the noise.
And yes—only those who climb the 99steps get to experience it.

DAYTIME - Hilltop café & lunch
By day, 99steps opens as a small neighbourhood café. We serve simple lunch plates and good coffee to locals, travelers, and anyone curious enough to make the climb.
Open on
Tuesdays – Saturdays
11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
No rush, no noise—just an easy place to pause.
SUNSET BAR - Drinks above the city
On selected evenings, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, the café quietly transforms into a small sunset bar. In winter, the sun dips behind the hills around 5:30 PM. With your first drink, the sky shifts color, and soon after, city lights begin to glow below.
We serve simple pub-style food, beer, and whisky. Nothing fancy—just honest, well-chosen drinks and an easy atmosphere.
Open on
Fridays and Saturdays
5:00PM – 9:00 PM
Sundays 4:00PM– 8:00PM
99steps - You earn this view
There’s no elevator. From the street, you climb 99 concrete steps to reach the house. It’s not for everyone, and that’s part of the point. If you enjoy a little effort and a good reward, the climb becomes part of the experience. Take it slow. Stop when you need. With every step, the city quietly slips away.
ACCESS - Close, but quietly apart
99steps is located in Wakaba-cho, Sasebo.
It's close enough to downtown for cafés, bars, and evenings out,
yet far enough to feel calm, cool, and silent at night—a place
slightly removed and exactly where you want to be.
